The redevelopment of Hiththan Maizan, a public park located in front of the national museum in the Maldivian capital, will wrap up in September, according to the Male’ City Council.

The Hiththan Maizan was developed during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration in the lot next to Ameeniya School, as a public park where parents and students can sit and relax.

The park was closed for redevelopment last year.

Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim told Sun on Sunday morning that the redevelopment of Hiththan Maizan was awarded to a private contractor back during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s mayorship.

He said that the park is being redeveloped to add kiosks for ice cream and other refreshments, as well as additional seating space.

The contractor expects to finish the project and hand it over to the council next month, he said.

The “under development” sign boards at the site show the project was awarded to a private contractor called Gold Company.

“They are developing a café-style space there,” said Azim.

Several members of the public have expressed concern over the prolonged closure of the park, located in an area where the national museum, the Sultan’s Park, souvenir shops and other tourist hotspots are situated.

Male’ saw a number of public spaces developed during President Muizzu’s mayorship. His successor, Azim has also been engaged in efforts to add in more green spaces to the congested capital.
