The body of the young man killed in L. Maavah is scheduled to be sent overseas for an autopsy on Wednesday, nine days after he was killed in a knife attack.
Moosa Ibrahim, 29, Nalahiya, L. Maavah, died from a knife wound to his neck during a physical altercation outside the volleyball court in Maavah at around 10:00 am on July 28. Mohamed Ibrahim, 29, Asaree Manzil, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, surrendered himself to the police shortly afterwards. He has been remanded in jail pending the outcome of his trial.
On Tuesday, a police spokesperson said Moosa’s body will be flown to India for an autopsy to determine the cause of death on Wednesday.
It comes nine days after he was killed, and eight since his body was transported to Male’ City for forensic examinations.
The delay has sparked concern from Moosa’s family, who wish to have his body buried and funeral rites performed as soon as possible.
During his remand hearing on July 29, Mohamed confessed to attacking Moosa using a knife.
According to multiple sources from Maavah, Moosa was killed in a dispute that arose between the two after Mohamed, an alleged drug addict and petty thief, failed to pay Moosa, an alleged drug dealer, money he owed for drugs.
Sources report that Moosa and his group had repeatedly beaten Mohamed over the issue, including a day before the murder, when they beat him up and threw him into the lagoon.
At around 10:00 am on July 28, Moosa and a friend saw Mohamed near the island’s volleyball court and attacked him.
It was during this altercation that Mohamed took out a knife and slashed Moosa’s throat, severing an artery.
Mohamed reportedly fled to the beach, where he threw away his knife into the water and then went to the police station to surrender himself to the authorities.
The police retrieved the murder weapon after Mohamed showed him where he threw it.
The police confirm Mohamed has a criminal record. While he does not reside in Maavah, he is in a relationship with a woman from the island and frequently visits the island.
