MVR 5,000 distributed per person as Zakat al-Mal; an increase by MVR 1,000

MVR 5,000 has been distributed per person as Zakat al-Mal, marking an increase of MVR 1,000 compared to last year.

Last year, Zakat al-Mal was distributed at a rate of MVR 4,000 per person.

Islamic Ministry, on Thursday, said Zakat al-Mal has been distributed at a rate of MVR 5,000 per person this year, for 2,852 people registered on the Ministry’s poverty registry.

Islamic Minister Dr. Shaheem Ali Saeed has also announced the decision to introduce insurance coverage for individuals on the poverty registry suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer, starting from the Islamic new year.

According to the Minister, the initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Allied Insurance.

The Minister detailed that the insurance extends to medical care in circumstances it is not covered by Aasandha, life-saving procedures performed overseas and procuring medication from abroad that is not available locally.

Minister Shaheem emphasized that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has undertaken significant efforts to strengthen the Zakat system in the Maldives, including the inception of a dedicated institution for the purpose.

He cited last year as the year with the highest collection of Zakat al-Mal, adding Zakat Fund is used to support the basic needs of individuals listed on the poverty registry.
