Broadcasting Commission's Secretary General Mariyam Zeeniya has been terminated citing non-cooperation with the commission's operations
The Secretary General of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) Mariyam Zeeniya was removed from the commission for allegedly being uncooperative in implementing the commission’s decisions.
‘Sun’ Online learned among the reasons for Zeeniya’s termination included noncompliance with the commission’s decisions, failure to perform legal obligations and negligence.
Prior to her termination, Zeeniya was suspended for a three-day period on Tuesday last week which resulted in several of the commission’s staff walking out of the office in protest.
She was previously alleged of abusing her position to intimidate and threaten a subordinate staff member, for which the commission had launched a probe as well. She is also alleged to have shown lack of respect towards the commission’s President Safaa Shafeeq. She received a verbal warning following this.
Earlier on May 18, a petition was submitted to Maldives Parliament alleging BroadCom’s president and members were obstructing its staff from performing their responsibilities.
The president and some of members have been alleged to have derailed entire operations of the commission, who were violating the administrative frameworks. They have also been alleged of impeding the responsibilities of the commission’s SG and directors.
The commission’s president however, said that the concerns were not brought to the attention of the members.
In response, Safaa claimed she along with the other members have always maintained close ties with the commission’s staff. She further claimed the concerns raised in the petition have not been brought to their attention as well.
