Police in Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo to understand evolving criminal environment

Maldives Police Service has commenced an activity in GDh. Madaveli and GDh. Hoadedhdhoo to get a better understanding of evolving criminal environment.

According to the Home Ministry, the activity which kicked off on May 14th, is headed by neighborhood police from Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo.

As part of the initiative, police officers will be meeting with stakeholders from both islands, heads of various institutions, businesses and senior citizens to inquire information.

Information inquired in this regard will include the current state of the criminal environment in the respective islands and their concerns in this trajectory. Discussions will also be held regarding avenues for collaboration between the public and the authorities to reduce crime.

Home Ministry said the initiative will pave way to work closely with the public, respond swiftly to their concerns, and deliver a reliable service. Furthermore, it would aid in identifying the changes to the evolving criminal environment, the probability of crimes and how the police should shape their response.

Speaking with Sun, an official from Maldives Police Service said the initiative is spearheaded by stations of the respective islands under the ‘neighborhood policing concept’.

While the activities at Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo are spearheaded by GDh. Atoll, the initiative will be expanded to remaining islands within this month.

According to the latest census, Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo have a population of 2,000.

Drugs and theft top crimes as per statistics disclosed by the Police. In this regard, a total of 1,170 theft-related crimes and 676 drug-related crimes have been reported so far this year. They include 12 drug-related crimes and nine theft-related crimes reported from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
