Pres affirms commitment to ensure equal rights, opportunities for thalassemia children

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that children with thalassemia have equitable access to all the rights and opportunities afforded by the nation, emphasizing the need for these to be fully accessible.

He made the remark in a message commemorating World Thalassemia Day.

In his message, the President called on everyone to demonstrate this principle through both words and actions.

He emphasized the gravity of the issue, citing Maldives has one of the highest rates of thalassemia in the world relative to its population. As such, he stressed the importance of enhancing public awareness, expanding access to treatment across the country and the duty of relevant authorities to prioritize the health and consistent care of children living with the condition.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering the pledges made during the 2023 presidential elections on the care and support of children with thalassemia. In this regard, he assured that his administration would take tangible action to address long-standing issues that have been neglected, to bring meaningful relief and improved well-being to affected children and their families.

The President concluded his message by urging the public to donate blood, highlighting the spiritual fulfilment and blessings associated with the act. He also called on all Maldivians to stand in solidarity and extend compassion to every child confronting the challenges of thalassemia.

In addition to the message, the President commemorated the occasion via post on social media.

In his post, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that children with thalassemia are granted equal access to opportunities in Maldivian society, free from discrimination. He added that helping them achieve a joyful and fulfilling life would mark a major step forward for the nation as a whole.
