A man from ADh. Omadhoo has been ordered to pay a fine of over MVR 116,000 for threatening to kill a doctor over denial of pain medication and for threatening to torch the island’s police post.
The incidents in question took place in Omadhoo back in 2024.
The Omadhoo native was charged with two counts of threatening to inflict immediate bodily harm under the Penal Code; for threatening an expatriate doctor at the local health center and police officers who attended to the scene.
According to the state, the man went to the health center complaining of a pinched nerve in his neck and asked for a pain killer injection. But he grew angry when the doctor refused to administer the injection, and threatened to kill him. He later went to the doctor’s residence and threatened him again.
He also threatened to set fire to the island’s police post when officers arrived at the scene.
During trial, the man said he raised his voice and made a scene because he was in a lot of pain and also under the influence of narcotics at the time.
The Omadhoo Magistrate Court found him guilty on both counts, but converted his prison sentence to a fine in September.
The one-and-a-half-year prison sentence for threatening the police was converted to a fine of MVR 112,200, and the 22-day sentence for threatening the doctor was converted to a fine of MVR 4,500.
He was therefore ordered to pay a total of MVR 116,700.
