A cargo boat travelling from Addu to Male' City capsized on the Rasmale' reef, which is currently being dredged under the government’s land reclamation project.

Police said they received the report of the shipwreck at 11:15 pm on Saturday. There were four people on board at the time of the incident, including a local captain and three foreigners.

According to police, the Coast Guard and Marine Police immediately responded to the scene. The four occupants were picked up by a vessel from Rasmale' and transferred to another vessel operating in the area with assistance from a Coast Guard craft.

Police said efforts to dislodge the boat from the reef are now being carried out by the owner.

The Rasmale' land reclamation project is the largest development initiative undertaken by the current administration, involving extensive dredging and land expansion works in the area.
