Fisheries Ministry has contracted a Malaysian company to develop ice plants on 11 islands across the Maldives.
According to information shared by the Ministry, the project is aimed at further developing the fisheries sector and ensuring fishermen have easier access to ice. Under the agreement, 30-ton ice plants will be installed on each of the 11 islands, with each facility equipped with 50-ton ice storage capacity.
The project has been awarded to Malaysian company Altus Oil & Gas, with the official agreement signed on Monday.
Under the project, ice plants will be established in M. Mulah, Dh. Hulhudheli, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, GA. Nilandhoo, GA. Villingili, Sh. Komandhoo, GA. Maamendhoo, AA. Rasdhoo, HA. Dhidhdhoo, K. Gaafaru, and GDh. Rathafandhoo.
A large-scale initiative is currently underway to establish ice plants across multiple islands to address the difficulties faced by fishermen in accessing ice. Last month, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam stated that the current administration had already developed and operationalized five ice plants. He added that the government aims to complete an additional seven ice plants by the end of this year.
