A man has been arrested for attempting to rob an accommodation block housing foreign workers.
The suspect, a 31-year-old from R. Maduvvari, was produced before the Criminal Court on Thursday on charges of theft.
According to the court order, he was taken into custody after police presented evidence linking him to the attempted robbery. The incident report states that he entered a building occupied by expatriates and was caught in the act. The court noted that he has a record of several theft offences and, if released, might reoffend. He was therefore remanded for 15 days, with his remand expiring on Friday, October 30.
Such theft cases have become increasingly common in Maldives. Police statistics show 9,907 cases reported so far this year, 2,751 of them theft-related. The court remarked that repeated offences of this nature warrant continued custody until investigation is complete.
