The Criminal Court has scheduled the sentencing for former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom in the R. Fuggiri bribery and money laundering case for October 29.

During a hearing in the case held on Tuesday, presiding Judge Ali Nadeem announced the conclusion of all trial stages after the defense finished presenting their closing arguments. The prosecution had delivered its closing remarks during Wednesday's hearing.

President Yameen faces charges of accepting a bribe and money laundering in connection with the lease of Fuggiri through the MMPRC without a public bid. While the case originally involved allegations against six different parties, the state has since withdrawn charges against the others.

The prosecution alleges that the transaction—in which Fuggiri was leased to Dubai-based Classic City Island Holdings for USD 1.55 million without a competitive bidding process—was orchestrated to generate personal financial gain for Yameen. The state further contends that the deal was structured to under-report the actual value to the state, ensuring that the remaining funds were channeled to Yameen and his political party.
