The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing locally manufactured products promoted with health benefits, warning that the purported benefits of many such products have not been scientifically verified.

In a statement, the MFDA said it had observed advertisements for certain locally produced food items that use laboratory analysis reports to suggest health benefits. The authority clarified that using such reports in food advertisements is strictly prohibited under the Food Advertising Regulations.

The MFDA further emphasized that the regulations prohibit advertisements suggesting that food products can cure diseases or cause specific physiological changes in the body.

According to the authority, any health claims made in the production or promotion of food products must be supported by accurate information backed by scientific research. However, it noted that many products currently available in the Maldivian market lack scientific evidence to substantiate their claimed health benefits.

As such, the MFDA has urged consumers to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety when considering the use of such products.
