The motorcyclist involved in a dangerous accident in Hulhumale’ last week was detained in a fraud case but was released early, with police stating on Monday that the decision was made as his detention was no longer necessary for the investigation.
The dangerous collision took place at around 02:55 am October 7 on the main road of Hulhumale’ Phase II when three people on a single motorcycle who were driving recklessly to flee the police crashed into another motorcycle with two people.
The accident resulted in injuries to all five people, two of whom remain in critical condition.
Sun was able to confirm the identity of the man driving the three-person motorcycle as Ahmed Uwais, 22, a man with an extensive criminal record.
Uwais was recently arrested for allegedly using a fake bank transfer slip to rent a room at a guesthouse, and was remanded in custody of the police for 15 days on October 1. However, he was released early.
When questioned about the circumstances of his early release, a police spokesperson told Sun that Uwais was released on October 6 – meaning the accident took place mere hours after his release.
The spokesperson said he was released as the portion of the investigation that required for him to be detained had wrapped up.
Uwais was also one of two people arrested from the Hiyaa flats back in 2024, after the police forced open the door of an apartment in response to cries of a woman.
He was arrested again in June on allegations of aiding the escape of a suspect held in connection to a police investigation.
Three people injured in the October 7 accident remain hospitalized.
This includes two people who sustained critical injuries and remain on ventilator support, and two in the ward.
The police investigation uncovered the motorcycle with three people was driving the wrong way on a one-way street when it collided with the second motorcycle. The police said the driver was unlicensed, and the motorcycle is believed to have been stolen.
The two people they crashed into are brothers, who the family reported sustained serious injuries.
The accident is under further investigation by the police.
