Man driving three-person motorbike had early release from jail ahead of Hulhumale’ crash

The man who was driving the three-person motorbike that crashed into a second motorcycle in a dangerous accident in Hulhumale’ last week had been remanded in jail just a week before the accident that injured five people, but had been released early.

The dangerous collision took place at around 02:55 am October 7 on the main road of Hulhumale’ Phase II when three people on a single motorcycle who were driving recklessly to flee the police crashed into another motorcycle with two people.

The accident resulted in injuries to all five people, who were initially treated at the Hulhumale’ Hospital before getting transferred to IGMH in Male’ City.

Sun was able to confirm through credible sources the identity of the man driving the three-person motorcycle as Ahmed Uwais, 22, a man with an extensive criminal record.

Uwais was recently arrested in a fraud case, and was remanded in custody of the police for 15 days on October 1. However, he was released early after the police wrapped up the investigation into the case.

He was also one of two people arrested from the Hiyaa flats back in 2024, after the police forced open the door of an apartment in response to cries of a woman.

He was arrested again in June on allegations of aiding the escape of a suspect held in connection to a police investigation.

Three people injured in the October 7 accident remain hospitalized.

This includes two people who sustained critical injuries and remain on ventilator support, and two in the ward.

The police investigation uncovered the motorcycle with three people was driving the wrong way on a one-way street when it collided with the second motorcycle. The police said the driver was unlicensed, and the motorcycle is believed to have been stolen.

The two people they crashed into are brothers, who the family reported sustained serious injuries.

The accident is under further investigation by the police.
