The Government of Japan is considering extending Official Security Assistance (OSA) to the Maldives for the first time, marking a significant milestone that will elevate the long-standing bilateral relations between both nations to new heights, stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Iruthisham Adam.

The Foreign Minister made these remarks while addressing the special ceremony held today at Hotel Jen to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives.

"Both the Maldives and Japan, as maritime nations, understand the importance of commitment to the principles of a free and open Indo-Pacific, where we believe stability and prosperity are anchored in inclusivity, peace, and respect for the rule of law. And it is through these ideals that I am especially pleased to hear that the Government of Japan is considering extending Official Security Assistance to the Maldives for the first time. Crucially, we see this as the first step towards expanding our cooperation and elevating our people-to-people connections."

The Minister also recalled her recent productive discussions with her Japanese counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan next year.
