Zakat aid rises 12% in August as spending tops MVR 5.17m

A total of MVR 5.17 million was disbursed as Zakat aid last month, according to statistics released by the Zakat House on Wednesday.

The office said MVR 5,170,675.91 was distributed in August 2026, a 12 percent increase compared to MVR 4,615,944.84 disbursed in August 2025.

Statistics show that the largest share of last month’s aid was spent on the poor and needy, totaling MVR 2,358,675.66. This includes MVR 2,316,175.66 for medical assistance and MVR 42,500 for essential needs.

The next largest expenditure was under the Fi Sabilillah category, which amounted to MVR 2,544,823.64.

Among these, MVR 1,047,219.50 was spent on religious programs, and MVR 797,604.14 on higher-education assistance.  

In addition, MVR 579,585.40 was spent on book translation, and MVR 120,414.60 on Quran memorisation programs and spreading Quranic knowledge.

A total of MVR 60,061 was released under the debtor assistance section, while MVR 19,834.02 was disbursed under the distressed travellers section.

The Zakat Fund recorded a total income of MVR 7,353,416.98 in August this year.
