26-year-old woman injured in Sosun Magu accident dies

The 26-year-old woman who sustained critical injuries in a serious road accident on Sosun Magu last Saturday night has passed away on Friday.

The Police said that the family informed authorities of her death this afternoon while she was undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital. The deceased has been identified as Aishath Maahidha from Sh. Foakaidhoo. 

Her funeral prayer will be held after Fajr prayer on Saturday morning. 

Sun has learned that Maahidha joined Maldives Immigration nine months ago and was serving as an Assistant Officer at the time of her death. Prior to that, she was employed at Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

In a statement expressing deep sorrow over her untimely passing, Maldives Immigration extended its condolences, noting Mahidha’s dedicated service to the nation and its citizens during her brief tenure with the institution. The agency also offered prayers for her eternal peace in Paradise and for strength and patience for her grieving family.

A total of three individuals were injured in the collision, including a 21-year-old Maldivian man, a 22-year-old Maldivian man, and the 26-year-old woman who later succumbed to her injuries. The two men received medical treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Video footage of the incident circulating on social media showed the woman lying unresponsive at the scene with severe head injuries and bleeding, while the two men also appeared to have sustained various injuries.

According to police, the 21-year-old man who was driving one of the motorcycles involved in the accident did not possess a valid driving licence. On Wednesday night, the Police confirmed that one individual had been arrested in connection with the case, although the identity of the person has not been disclosed.

Traffic accidents remain a frequent occurrence in the Malé area, with police statistics indicating that more than 2,100 accidents have been reported so far this year.
