Speaker Abdul Raheem commends Pakistan’s regional peace efforts

Maldivian Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, on Thursday, met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Defense Forces General Syed Asim Munir.

The meeting took place at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where Speaker Abdul Raheem praised Pakistan’s important role in promoting regional peace and stability. According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, General Asim Munir highlighted the importance Pakistan places on its bilateral relations with the Maldives.

The discussions centred primarily on regional security and opportunities to strengthen multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. The ISPR stated that General Munir highlighted the close fraternal ties between the Maldives and Pakistan and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further developing bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both nations.

The statement also noted Speaker Abdul Raheem’s interest in working together on issues of mutual concern and broadening bilateral engagement. Both sides described the discussions as an important step towards further strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

Speaker Abdul Raheem is currently undertaking a five-day official visit to Pakistan, accompanied by 16 lawmakers from ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), following an invitation from the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. During the visit, the Speaker has held high-level meetings with senior Pakistani political figures and members of the Pakistan-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group. His itinerary also includes visits to prominent historical and cultural sites in Islamabad.

The visit marks the first official invitation extended by the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly to a Speaker of the Maldives’ parliament.
