Police issue public notice for man wanted in drug investigation

Police are looking for a man who has been ordered to appear in connection with a case being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Department.

According to Police, the summons could not be delivered as his whereabouts are unknown. As a result, he has been instructed to appear for the investigation under Article 27 of the Rules of Procedure for the Investigation of Criminal Cases.

Police are seeking Ali Shafiu, 39, of Shihama Manzil, Th. Madifushi. He has been ordered to report to the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building on the 30th of this month at 2:00 pm.

It is noteworthy that the drug problem remains one of the biggest social, economic and health challenges in Maldives.

Factors contributing to the rise in drug-related issues include difficulties in monitoring the country’s vast maritime territory, limited employment and recreational opportunities for youth, the recruitment of children into gang-run operations, and inadequate treatment and rehabilitation systems.

These challenges have also led to an increase in crimes such as theft and robbery.

The Drug Enforcement Command of the Maldives Police Service continues to conduct operations to prevent drug smuggling and trafficking, dismantle large networks, raise public awareness, and support treatment systems. Police emphasise that community cooperation is essential for the success of these efforts.
