Pres. Muizzu: Maldives will continue to work with UN ensure voices of SIDS are heard

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Maldives will continue to work closely with the United Nations (UN) to advance sustainable development and ensure that the voices of SIDS contribute meaningfully to shaping an equitable and climate-resilient global economy.

President Muizzu made the remarks in a message marking the 61st anniversary of the Maldives’ membership of the United Nations. The Maldives joined the UN on September 21^st, 1965.

The President reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to advocating for meaningful reform of the UN and equitable representation within the organisation, while advancing the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and ensuring their meaningful participation as equal partners.

He highlighted the Maldives’ continued advocacy for climate resilience, sustainable solutions to debt and debt sustainability, improved access to adequate and affordable financing, including for climate adaptation, and greater opportunities for SIDS to strengthen their capacities.

Reflecting on the Maldives’ six decades of membership in the UN, President Muizzu highlighted the organisation’s contribution to the country’s development, including its support for the Maldives’ graduation from Least Developed Country status.

He said the partnership with the UN remains important as the Maldives works towards its national ambition of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040.

The President also highlighted the Maldives’ growing engagement and leadership within the UN system, noting the country’s service as Vice-President of the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, as well as its forthcoming membership of the Commission on the Status of Women and the Economic and Social Council.

He further noted the Maldives’ pursuit of elections to the Human Rights Council and the Security Council.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to international law and the UN Charter, President Muizzu underscored the importance of diplomacy, dialogue and inclusive multilateral governance in addressing increasingly complex challenges facing the international community.

Concluding his message, President Muizzu reflected on the Maldives’ evolving role within the United Nations, noting that while the country joined the organization in 1965 seeking recognition and partnership, it is now ready to take on greater responsibility in shaping the organization and contributing to a resilient future where development leaves no one behind.
