Father dies days after crash at Hulhumale’ that also left son injured

A 62-year-old father who sustained critical injuries in a road accident in Hulhumale’ has died at the Tree Top Hospital, where he had been on life support for the past two weeks.

Mohamed Afeef, 62, had been driving his 24-year-old son, a person with disabilities, to his office when his motorcycle crashed into a car.

The accident took place at around 7:44 am on August 31 at the intersection of Heenaamaa Hingun and Dhunburigas Magu in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

The accident resulted in injuries to both Afeef and his son. The duo was initially taken to the Hulhumale’ Hospital, before Afeef was transferred to the Tree Top Hospital for specialized care due to the severity of his injuries.

Male’ City councilwoman Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya) told Sun in an earlier interview that Afeef was a dialysis patient, and suffered a brain hemorrhage in the accident.

Afeef showed no signs of improvement even after undergoing brain surgery and remained on life support at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

His funeral prayer will be held at Masjid Zaid bin Saabit located at the Hulhumale’ cemetery after noon prayer.

Afeef was a retired school teacher who taught Dhivehi language in multiple schools, including Male’ English School (MES), English Preparatory School (EPS), Aminiya School, Ghaazee School and Aliya School. He had continued to tutor students from his home.
