More than MVR 104.4 million has been collected as property zakat in the first eight months of this year, according to the latest figures released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
MIRA’s August statistics show that MVR 104.4 million has been collected so far this year, compared to MVR 82.1 million during the same period last year, an increase of 27 percent.
Property zakat collection for August alone stood at MVR 7.3 million, while the figure for August last year was MVR 8.5 million.
Property zakat is paid at one-fortieth (2.5 percent) of eligible wealth after it remains above the nisab for one Hijri year, in accordance with Shariah rules. The current nisab for property zakat is MVR 19,266.10.
According to statistics released by the Zakat House, the highest annual property zakat collection since the introduction of the system was recorded last year. Figures show that from 2021 to 2025, annual collections exceeded MVR 90 million every year, with last year’s total reaching MVR 107.21 million.
