Visa-free travel to Maldives for Ghanaians

Citizens of Ghana are now able to travel to the Maldives without obtaining visa prior to their arrival.

In a public announcement issued last Tuesday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the change follows the implementation of a reciprocal visa waiver agreement between the two countries. In addition to the Maldives, Ghanaian citizens can now travel to Zambia and Antigua and Barbuda without obtaining a visa prior.

According to Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, the visa waiver applies to holders of ordinary, service, and diplomatic passports. Under the agreement, Ghanaian citizens traveling to the Maldives and Zambia may remain in the countries without a visa for up to 30 days. Those traveling to Antigua and Barbuda are permitted a visa-free stay of up to 90 days. The agreements took effect following their approval by the Ghanaian Cabinet in April.

Despite the introduction of the visa waiver, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged travelers to comply fully with the immigration laws and entry requirements of the respective countries. This includes holding a valid passport and completing all documentation required by the relevant authorities. The Ministry also clarified that individuals traveling for employment, education, or residency purposes must obtain the appropriate permits from the relevant authorities before departure.

The Government of Ghana has advised its citizens to confirm any changes to health regulations or other entry requirements with the relevant authorities or the nearest embassies before traveling. The Ministry said the agreements are primarily aimed at facilitating travel for Ghanaian citizens while further strengthening international relations.

The Maldives is currently pursuing several initiatives aimed at attracting tourists from a wider range of international markets. As part of these efforts, Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa’s major carriers, is preparing to launch direct flights to the Maldives later this year.
