Iran launches retaliation against US assets in Jordan. (Photo/Reuters)
Iran has launched missiles towards a US base in Jordan and claimed strikes on two American destroyers in retaliation for recent US attacks, as Tehran widens its threats against US assets and oil tankers in the region.
Jordan's air defences said it intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles fired from Iran in an attack targeting a US base, the Jordanian military confirmed.
A military spokesperson added that the remaining missiles landed in open areas without causing civilian harm or infrastructural damage.
The barrage followed an announcement by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claiming missile strikes against a US military base in Jordan as well as US combat destroyers DDG-119 and DDG-53, which are equipped with cruise missiles and Aegis combat systems.
In a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the IRGC claimed it retaliated in a "much stronger way" against "aggressive actions and malicious harassment against Iranian oil tankers and vessels," asserting it inflicted significant damage on the targeted destroyers and US facilities.
Port threats
The cross-border missile strikes coincide with escalating naval hostilities in the Gulf.
Iran's navy has warned that oil tankers berthed in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports will be targeted in retaliatory strikes, urging crews to evacuate immediately following reported US attacks on Iranian vessels, state broadcaster IRIB confirmed.
In an official statement carried by IRIB, naval authorities declared that the warning was issued in direct response to US military strikes targeting several Iranian commercial oil tankers.
The naval command called upon all crew members aboard tankers anchored in ports across Kuwait and Bahrain to vacate their vessels without delay, warning explicitly that the ships will become targets of military action.
The warning follows a report by Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency earlier Tuesday stating that an Iranian oil tanker was struck by a US missile roughly 7.4 kilometres from Kharg Island in the Gulf.
Tasnim reported that the missile hit the vessel close to the island's primary anchorage zone.
No casualties were reported, and the crew was successfully evacuated.
IRIB subsequently reported that US forces attacked a second Iranian oil tanker situated off the coast of Jask in southern Iran, outside the Gulf.
The US said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday in response to the latest attacks on its warships. Tehran hit back by striking an American base in Jordan with several ballistic missiles.
