MDP activist Shamin arrested over Aug 28 protest

An opposition activist was arrested for obstruction on Tuesday, in connection to a protest held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) last month.

Mohamed Shamin was apprehended by the police and taken to the Galolhu Police Station in the afternoon.

His arrest warrant shows that he is accused of obstructing the police and crossing police barricades to enter a closed off area during a protest in Male’ City on August 28.

The police submitted a statement from a police officer who was at the scene, snapshots of CCTV footage as well as an intelligence report to the Criminal Court as evidence against Shamin, who works as a taxi driver.

Shamin had also been detained back in 2024 over a protest held by taxi drivers, but was later granted conditional release.

Another MDP activist, Ahmed Maimoon was also arrested over the August 28 protest, but was released by the court on Sunday after his initial five-day remand period expired.
