Discussions held on challenges to drug rehabilitation in the south region

Discussions have been held on challenges associated with drug rehabilitation and the recovery process in the southern region, with an emphasis on coordinating institutional efforts and identifying ways to strengthen support mechanisms.

The discussions were held as part of a forum titled "Revisiting Gaps and Recovery in the South," which concluded today. Representatives from the Maldives Police Service, the Drug Court, the National Drug Agency (NDA), and the Prosecutor General’s Office participated in the forum.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed attended the closing ceremony of the forum as the chief guest, which was held at Canareef Resort Maldives on Monday.

According to the Police, the forum was convened to identify challenges in the treatment of drug users and their reintegration into society, while providing a platform for relevant stakeholders to engage in high-level discussions on the issue.

During the forum, representatives of the participating institutions exchanged views on the challenges and barriers encountered throughout the treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery processes in the southern region, with the aim of coordinating their efforts and identifying opportunities to provide greater assistance.

Speaking at the forum, Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed said that the discussions had resulted in an agreement on 12 key points. He stressed that these decisions would play an important role in advancing efforts to address the drug issue, not only across the four southern atolls but throughout the country.

The Commissioner stressed that drug abuse is not an issue limited to any particular island or atoll, but rather a serious national concern that requires a coordinated response involving the state and the wider community.

He also recognized the cooperation extended by state institutions, including the Drug Court, the NDA, and the Prosecutor General’s Office, in addressing the issue.

Emphasizing the challenges involved in translating the outcomes of such forums into practical measures, the Commissioner said it was essential to ensure that the academic and theoretical discussions documented on paper do not remain merely as dialogue, but are instead implemented in ways that produce tangible benefits for the public. He assured that the Maldives Police Service would extend its full cooperation towards achieving the objectives agreed upon during the forum.

With drug-related issues continuing to pose a significant social challenge in the Maldives, the government is pursuing various initiatives aimed at addressing and resolving the problem.
