ADK Hospital has successfully carried out the first robotic-assisted surgeries in Maldives.
The hospital said on Sunday that two robotic-assisted total knee replacement (TKR) procedures have already been completed using the new system.
Following the surgeries, ADK Group of Companies Chairman and CEO Ahmed Nashid said the President has shown strong commitment to investing in the health sector, particularly in developing specialised services that are not yet available in Maldives. He said the hospital is grateful for the encouragement and support.
Nashid said ADK’s investment in robotic surgery marks an important step in bringing modern technology and advanced expertise to Maldives, and in strengthening the country’s ability to provide specialised care locally.
“We appreciate the President’s encouragement to invest in the health sector, especially to develop specialised services currently unavailable in Maldives,” Nashid said.
Ministry of Finance announced on July 29 that it is procuring a multi-port robotic surgical system for Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital.
The international tender requires the supply and installation of the system, along with testing, staff training and maintenance.
A multi-port robotic surgical system is an advanced platform that allows surgeons to operate using robotic arms controlled through a computer console. The robotic arms, equipped with cameras and specialised instruments, are inserted into the patient’s body through very small incisions.
Health experts say robotic surgery reduces the number of incisions and the amount of bleeding. Recovery time is faster, and the risk of infection is lower compared to conventional surgery.
The robotic arms also provide more precise movements than the human hand, and internal organs can be viewed clearly in 3D. This gives surgeons greater accuracy when performing delicate procedures, including cancer, cardiac and urological surgeries.
