Indian arrested after customs find over 400 grams of suspected drugs hidden in his luggage

An Indian man who arrived in Maldives on an IndiGo flight with 80 rubber packets of suspected drugs hidden in his luggage was arrested on Saturday. The 29-year-old Indian national was taken into custody on charges of smuggling drugs into Maldives.

According to the court order, he was remanded in custody after sufficient evidence was presented against him. The order included the Maldives Customs Service’s complaint form, the statement of the police officer who attended the scene, and the results of the drug test.

When he arrived in Maldives on the IndiGo flight on Saturday, customs officers x-rayed his luggage and found two rubber packets containing suspected drugs inside the bag. In addition, the police statement said that when customs handed him over to police, officers searched his luggage and found 80 rubber packets containing suspected drugs. The provisional weight of the items was 440 grams.

The court order stated that the items tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and weighed 418.99 grams.

The Criminal Court said he was arrested in accordance with procedure. He was remanded in custody for 30 days, with the remand period set to expire at the end of October.

Customs is stepping up border-security measures to prevent drugs from entering Maldives. Drug smuggling and trafficking have increased significantly, and authorities are conducting numerous operations to curb the flow of narcotics into the country.
