President: Additional 2,000 employees to be recruited for healthcare sector this year

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday night, announced that the government plans to recruit an additional 2,000 employees for the healthcare sector this year.

Speaking during an episode of the "Rayyithunge Adu" programme, a Medical Officer working in the Emergency Department of Hulhumalé Hospital raised concerns over the shortage of staff relative to the growing number of patients seeking services. The officer noted that the resignation of several medical officers in December last year had created significant operational challenges and said requests for additional staffing had already been submitted.

Responding to these concerns, President Muizzu said the healthcare sector is the only area in which additional recruitment has been authorized this year.

"Nearly 2,000 staff will be recruited nationwide. These appointments are being made in successive batches," the President explained.

The President further said that the completion of GP Clinics in both the first and second phases of Hulhumalé would strengthen healthcare capacity and lead to a further increase in staffing levels. However, he emphasized that the recruitment process is already underway.

Concerns remain within the healthcare sector over the adequacy of facilities and resources required to provide proper medical care. Despite these challenges, Ministry of Finance statistics indicate that only MVR 232 million has been utilized to date from the MVR 814.7 million allocated for healthcare infrastructure this year.
