MDP activist Maimoon remanded for five days

Criminal Court, on Tuesday, has remanded MDP activist Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed in custody for five days following his arrest on charges of inciting unrest and obstructing police duties during a rally held in Malé last Friday night.

The Police told the media that Maimoon was arrested late last night under a court order. His arrest relates to allegations that he disrupted public order, crossed police barricades, and entered a restricted area during Friday night’s protest.

Maimoon was presented before the Criminal Court on Tuesday for a remand hearing, during which the court remanded him in custody for five days to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

Following Maimoon’s arrest, MDP’s Chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed called for his immediate release, stating that the right to assemble is a fundamental right guaranteed to every citizen.

Maimoon, who is employed by the Malé City Council, also serves as Vice President of the MDP Youth Wing. He has been taken into custody during several previous protests organized by the party.
