Man arrested for seizing car under intoxication and causing multi-vehicle crash in Fuvahmulah

Police are investigating a case involving a man who allegedly assaulted and threatened the owner of a car, forcibly took the vehicle, and then crashed it into a motorcycle, another car and a coconut palm tree while intoxicated.

Around 6:22 pm on Saturday, a car was reported to have crashed into a motorcycle in front of Moodige, Fuvahmulah City, before continuing without stopping and colliding with another car and a tree on the road.

A 35-year-old man who was driving the car has been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to police, the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and the series of collisions occurred after he forcibly seized the car by threatening to assault the owner and damage the vehicle.

Police said the woman riding the motorcycle and the eight-year-old girl seated behind her sustained injuries and were treated at the hospital.

However, police said neither of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

Two cars and the motorcycle sustained significant damage in the accidents, according to police. The case is under investigation.

A similar but deadly accident occurred in Hulhumalé Phase II on Saturday evening as well, where a nine-year-old girl was critically injured.

The accident happened near the Vinares 7 flat in Phase II.

According to police, CCTV footage shows the accident occurred when a motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road to board a car parked nearby.

An 18-year-old woman and a nine-year-old girl were injured in the accident, police said.

Both are being treated at the hospital, where the nine-year-old remains in critical condition.
