Addu Hulhudhoo Island Council staff protest outside their office, calling for the removal of the Secretary General (SG) of the council, August 17, 2026.
Members of the Hulhudhoo Island Council have staged a protest calling for the removal of the Council’s Secretary General (SG), who was appointed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC). Council members say they have lost confidence in the SG and want the administrative head removed immediately.
Hulhudhoo Council Vice President Aminath Milha Ali told Sun that the council has been operating under extremely difficult conditions for the past three months. She said the council president and the SG are occupying two separate cabins in the reception area, while the remaining councillors are working from a very small room inside the office.
Milha said the majority of council members have lost confidence in the SG due to issues they have been facing. She cited irregularities, discrimination against council employees, and violations of the Civil Service Code of Conduct as key concerns.
“The majority of the council has lost confidence in the SG. There are many irregularities, discrimination against these employees, and violation of the Civil Service Code of Conduct,” Milha said.
She said she had requested the council president to table a no-confidence motion, but the matter was not included in the agenda of the first sitting.
Milha also said the council’s internet service was cut off at 8:00 am on Monday, halting all administrative work. She attributed this to what she described as a lack of responsibility from the administrative head.
According to her, the council president refused to sign a report prepared by the employees and did not share the information with councillors.
Hulhudhoo Council President Jaadhulla Jameel could not be reached for comment as repeated calls went unanswered. Council SG Moosa Sidheeq was also unavailable for comment.
