MP Kudu moves to summon police and MNDF chiefs over recent maritime tragedies

Security forces chiefs have been asked to appear before the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services to clarify whether any internal investigations were conducted into recent tragic incidents during maritime operations that resulted in the deaths of two MNDF officers and two police officers.

The request was made in a letter submitted to the Speaker by Galolhu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) of MDP. In the letter, Kudu noted that four officers had suffered fatal incidents during operations carried out over the past four months:

• May: MNDF Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhy died while searching for missing Italian divers.  

• June: Police Staff Sergeant Ahmed Asif died at sea during a police drug‑interdiction operation.  

• Last Thursday: MNDF Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Ahmed and Police Sergeant Ali Nafiu went missing while attempting to rescue passengers from a sinking vessel.

Kudu said no official agency has conducted an investigation into any of these incidents. He has therefore moved the National Security Services Committee to clarify 12 key matters, including why no inquiry has been initiated, whether safety standards were followed during offshore operations, and what corrective measures, if any, were taken in response to possible negligence.

He also asked the committee to clarify what assurances can be given to address public concerns regarding the procedures followed by the security forces.

Kudu had previously submitted a motion requesting Defense Minister Hassan Rasheed to explain whether proper protocols were followed during the MNDF search operation for the missing Italian tourists, during which Sergeant First Class Mahudhy lost his life.
