Firefighters attended to 13 emergencies in Maldives’ capital last week

The Fire and Rescue Service attended to 13 different emergencies in the greater Male’ area last week, according to information released by the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

Statistics released by the MNDF on Monday shows the Fire and Rescue Service responded to total 13 incidents during the one-week period from August 2-8.

The highest number of cases involved hazmat incidents and fired, followed by disaster incidents and rescue incidents.

The 13 incidents involved:

• Fire incidents: 3
• Hazmat incidents: 3
• Disaster incidents: 2
• Rescue incident: 2
• Medical evacuation: 1
• Alarms incidents: 1
• Others: 1

All 13 incidents took place in the populous greater Male’ area and were attended to by the MNDF Male’ Area Command.

The high number of emergencies attended to by the Fire and Rescue Service comes as the Coast Guard continues to search for five people who went missing in two different incidents at sea amid strong winds and rough seas unleashed by monsoon rains.

This includes two Indian sailors who went missing after a landing craft capsized off K. Gaafaru on July 31.

The second incident involved three people, including a police officer and soldier involved in rescue efforts, who went missing after a supply vessel carrying rock aggregate and other construction material capsized in the Huvadhoo Sea on August 5.

The Maldives is seeking international assistance in the search efforts.
