President says Maldives-Singapore partnership is built on trust and shared hopes for regional peace and prosperity

The strong friendly relations between Maldives and Singapore are rooted in mutual trust, respect and a shared hope for peace and prosperity in the region, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said Sunday.

The President sent congratulatory messages to Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the occasion of Singapore’s National Day.

Maldives and Singapore have maintained close foreign, economic and social ties since 10 February. Economically, Singapore is Maldives’ second-largest importer, supplying food, medicine, electrical appliances and fuel. Singaporean companies have also made significant investments in the Maldives’ tourism sector.

The two countries enjoy strong cooperation in health and education. Singapore continues to offer higher-education opportunities to Maldivian students and provides training for civil service employees. Travel and visa arrangements have also been established between the two nations.

During his inaugural visit to Singapore last year, President Muizzu held high-level talks to strengthen bilateral relations and signed key agreements in capacity building, education and the environment. More than 200 business representatives attended the Maldives-Singapore Business Forum, where investment opportunities in the Maldives were showcased.

Singapore’s National Day is celebrated on 9 August, marking the country’s independence following its separation from Malaysia in 1965.

The President concluded his message by wishing Singapore continued development, unity and success.
