Woman remanded for 15 days on public nuisance charge

A 33-year-old woman from R. Innamaadhoo has been arrested on suspicion of causing a public disturbance.

She was taken into custody and remanded for 15 days. The woman denied the allegations during a closed-door hearing.

Public nuisance is an offence under the Maldives Penal Code. It covers acts that disrupt the safety, comfort, health or social peace of the public. Under Section 618 of the Criminal Procedure Code, this includes making loud noises, playing music or using sound systems in public or residential areas to the extent of disturbing others, obstructing traffic or pedestrians, and placing objects on public roads that hinder movement.

Section 615 of the Penal Code also classifies acts detrimental to public interest, such as fighting in public places, abusive speech and threats, as offences.

Public nuisance is a third-degree felony, punishable by imprisonment, fines or community service.
