WAMCO resumes Male' City waste intake; strict C&D sorting now mandatory

The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that waste collection from transfer stations in the Male' City area will resume as normal starting Saturday.

A fire broke out at WAMCO’s Thilafushi waste-processing site, the country’s primary municipal landfill and industrial hub, on the 19th of last month. The fire was extinguished later that morning.

The incident disrupted several services, prompting WAMCO to temporarily reduce the amount of waste accepted from transfer stations in Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale'.

Male' City Council had also raised concerns with WAMCO over the growing accumulation of garbage in the capital during the reduced-service period.

In an announcement issued Thursday, WAMCO said it will resume full waste-collection services from Saturday. Waste brought to transfer stations must comply with established disposal standards and segregation rules.

According to the announcement, waste must be separated into two primary categories: biodegradable waste and other waste.

WAMCO also reiterated its guidelines for C&D (Construction and Demolition) waste, which must be separated from general waste before delivery.

C&D waste includes:

• soil  

• crushed concrete  

• concrete pillars (two-foot sections) 

• concrete slabs (maximum one-foot width and length) 

• aggregate 

• bricks and hollow bricks 

• tiles 

• toilet bowls and sinks  

Mixed C&D and other waste include:

• PVC  

• timber  

• sackcloth  

• iron  

• plastic  

• cardboard  

WAMCO stated that waste not segregated according to these rules will not be accepted at transfer stations.
