President Muizzu congratulates Spain’s King and Prime Minister on World Cup victory

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon on Spain’s victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Spain defeated Argentina with a goal in the second half of extra time, securing their first World Cup title since 2010 and the second in the nation’s history.

According to the President’s Office, President Muizzu sent separate messages to the King and Prime Minister, describing the triumph as a testament to the skill, hard work and sporting excellence of the Spanish national team. He noted that football is immensely popular in the Maldives and that Spain enjoys strong support among Maldivian fans.

The President said Spain’s achievement was celebrated with great joy across the country, and expressed confidence that the victory would further strengthen the friendship and close relations between the Maldives and Spain. He also conveyed appreciation for the longstanding ties between the two nations, highlighting the valuable contributions of Spanish visitors and partners to the growth of the Maldives’ tourism industry.

President Muizzu concluded his messages by wishing the King and Prime Minister good health and well-being, and extended his best wishes for continued peace and prosperity for the people of Spain.

Before the World Cup, President Muizzu had publicly expressed support for Argentina, adding that he would back England if Argentina did not win. Argentina lost the final, while England secured the bronze medal after defeating France in the semi-finals.
