President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during his official visit to Doha on Monday.

The President departed for Qatar this morning to extend his condolences to the royal family following the passing of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. President Muizzu conveyed his condolences on behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives.

The two leaders also discussed the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Qatar and expressed their shared determination to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The government described the President’s visit as a reflection of the former Emir’s longstanding support to the Maldives. Under Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s leadership, Qatar transformed into one of the world’s richest and most influential states. He used the country’s vast natural gas resources to build a strong economy and established the globally renowned Al Jazeera media network.

Sheikh Hamad also laid the foundation for Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He stepped down in 2013, voluntarily transferring power to his son and the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
