A former police sergeant has lost a lawsuit he failed contesting his dismissal for allegedly pouring boiling water over a suspect held in detention.

The former officer, who worked at the Maafannu Police Station, was dismissed on suspicion of pouring boiling water over a suspect, resulting in burns.

The incident took place on August 18, 2021.

He filed an unlawful termination lawsuit with the Civil Court in October last year.

Judge Ahmed Abdul Matheen issued his ruling in the case last week.

He decided that the officer was dismissed following proper procedure, and there were therefore no grounds to establish his termination was unlawful.

Total 15 police officers were charged with torture over the incident. Their trial remains ongoing at the Criminal Court.
