In a first, AA. Rasdhoo Magistrate Court has publicized the identity of an individual who failed to comply with a court order to provide child support.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Court identified the individual as Mohamed Habeeb, Nooranmaage, ADh. Mandhoo. The court attributed its decision to publicize his identity to an official measure in response to failure to make court-mandated payments, citing he has repeatedly failed to pay child support.

The practice of publicly identifying individuals who default on child support was first introduced by the Lh. Hinnavaru Magistrate Court. Since then, the Family Court and the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Court have also disclosed the identities of individuals who fail to pay child support.

Despite the Maldives recording one of the highest divorce rates in the world, inadequate child support payments and the persistent difficulties in enforcing court-mandated child support payments remains a longstanding and unresolved social issue.
