The Male' City Council has begun collecting data for the Urban Mobility Survey, which aims to address congestion in the city, strengthen the transport system and make Male' easier to navigate for pedestrians.

The council said the study is an important step toward understanding the city’s traffic conditions and identifying solutions to the challenges faced by residents.

The survey is being conducted jointly by the council and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), under an initiative led by Male' City Mayor Adam Azim.

Katrin Luger, Section Chief of UNESCAP’s Transport Division, held a formal meeting with Mayor Azim on April 29 to discuss the project. The council said UNESCAP is providing funding for the study.

According to the council, the survey focuses on the number of vehicles owned by residents, the modes of transport used to travel between locations, and the challenges within the current transport system. The aim is to reduce congestion and build a more convenient mobility network for the public.

Twenty staff members from the Community Engagement Unit of the Male' City Council took part in the data collection phase, visiting more than 1,000 households across Greater Male', including Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale'.

A special stakeholder meeting to discuss the findings of the study has been scheduled for July 20–21 at Meeruma Hotel, the council said.
