Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee on Monday approved the appointment of Hassan Zareer as the third Finance Minister under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

Zareer was appointed to the position on June 8th, following the resignation of Moosa Zameer who previously held the post that stepped down over health issues.

The President’s request seeking parliamentary approval for Zareer’s appointment was submitted to the Parliament last Sunday and subsequently forwarded to the Committee for vetting.

The motion to endorse Zareer’s appointment was put forth by PNC’s Central Fuvahmulah MP Ali Fazaadh, citing Zareer meets all requirements for the ministerial post. The motion was seconded by Vilufushi MP Hassan Waheed and received unanimous support from committee members in attendance.

With the committee’s approval secured, the appointment will now be submitted to the full Parliament for a final vote.

Zareer is a seasoned finance professional with extensive experience in the sector. He is widely recognized for his contributions to strengthening the Maldives’ financial system, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

In addition to serving as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Bank of Maldives (BML), Zareer has held a number of senior positions in taxation and auditing since 2000, including roles as Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation and Commissioner General of Taxation.

Zareer holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He is also a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) accredited in the United Kingdom and a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) in Australia.
