Additional elevators have now been installed in all but one of the Hiyaa towers in Hulhumale' Phase II, according to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

The project to add two extra elevators to each tower began on 18 April last year. In February 2024, China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Group was awarded the contract to carry out the installations.

HDC, which manages Hulhumale' city, shared an update on Monday confirming that every tower except Hiyaa Tower 16 has received its new lifts. The corporation said work on Tower 16 will be expedited.

The newly installed elevators are designed to accommodate stretchers and have a capacity of 21 people.

More than thousands of residents live in the 25‑storey Hiyaa towers, where elevator shortages have long caused difficulties. Residents frequently report long queues, especially during peak hours. With the additional elevators now operational in most towers, the situation has seen some improvement.

Former HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed previously stated that the procurement of 32 elevators for the project cost USD 18 million.

Installing two additional elevators in each Hiyaa tower was a presidential pledge of Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
