MDP chairmanship candidate and former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Thursday evening that he will not lose courage, and pledged to win Friday’s election and “defeat” the current administration.

Nasheed made the remarks at the rally held to conclude his campaign ahead of Friday’s vote. A large number of supporters joined the rally, which ended with a brief address at the Artificial Beach.

Speaking to supporters, Nasheed said he remained firm in his determination.

“Our courage will not be weakened,” he said, adding that the “MDP army is now back.”

Nasheed repeated his earlier claim that he would bring political change and remove President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government.

“We will defeat him, we will overthrow him, we will move forward, forward fast,” he said.

During the march, Nasheed also urged all MDP members to turn out and vote enthusiastically on Friday.

He dismissed the suggestion that he might leave the party if he loses.

“No, no, no, nothing like that will happen. Hopefully I will not even lose; there’s no question about it,” he said.

The election for the chairmanship of the country’s largest opposition party will be held on Friday from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Nasheed is contesting against South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem. The third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed, withdrew earlier and endorsed Meekail.

Nasheed is campaigning with former MDP chairman Fayyaz Ismail, while Meekail is backed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and many of his associates.
