Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has launched a dedicated mobile app for Male’ Taxi Line.

The Male’ Taxi Line, a 24/7 public taxi service operated by MTCC, was launched on April 2. The service was supposed to launch with a dedicated mobile app, which is the subject of a parliamentary inquiry over allegations of corruption in the award of the contract to develop it.

MTCC rolled out the mobile app on App Store on Tuesday.

The company said that Android users can continue to book their rides via the web application or the hotline 1655 until the app gets rolled out on Play Store.

MTCC states that the Male’ Taxi Line conducted over 13,000 rides in the first month of its launch.

Back in April, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), a parliamentarian from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), filed a motion seeking a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of corruption in the award of a MVR 13 million contract to develop a dedicated mobile application for the service.

The government had launched the Male’ Taxi Line to address difficulties in getting taxis in the capital. However, people continue to complain that service hasn’t produced the desired results, and that people are still facing difficulties in getting taxis, especially on rainy days.

The Male’ Taxi Line has a fleet of 150 electric vehicles, including smaller cars that can navigate the narrow roads of Male’, and larger vehicles designed to transport passengers and luggage.
