Discussions held on expanding Maldives’ role within Commonwealth

Foreign Minister Dr. Iruthisham Adam has held high-level discussions focused on expanding the Maldives’ role within the Commonwealth and strengthening the country’s longstanding partnership with the organization.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Minister Iruthisham and the Commonwealth’s Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey at the Marlborough House, the Commonwealth’s headquarters in London.

During the discussions, the Minister highlighted the close and enduring relationship between the Maldives and the Commonwealth.

In her remarks, Secretary-General Botchwey commended the Maldives for its continued leadership in addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and for advocating their priorities within the Commonwealth community.

The Secretary-General also expressed her pleasure in welcoming Minister Iruthisham back to Marlborough House, underscoring the importance the Maldives places on the Commonwealth’s work and shared values.

In a post following the meeting, Minister Iruthisham thanked the Secretary-General for the opportunity to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest.

The Minister reaffirmed that the Maldives places significant importance on its relationship with the Commonwealth and reiterated the country’s steadfast commitment to upholding the organization’s core principles and charters.

She further stated that enhancing the Maldives’ engagement and assuming a more active and influential role within the Commonwealth remains a key national objective in the years ahead.

Since rejoining the Commonwealth in 2020, the Maldives has become a prominent advocate for small island nations, championing key global issues including climate change, maritime security, and sustainable development.

 

Through active participation in various Commonwealth forums, the Maldives seeks to advance its foreign policy priorities while expanding opportunities for international cooperation and collaboration with fellow member states.
