Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court has ordered to close down a premises suspected of providing drug services in Fuvahmulah City on “café” basis.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the court order targets a specific part of Gulisthaanuge in Funaadu district of Fuvahmulah City. Authorities suspect the location is being utilized to traffic and sell narcotics, as well as operating as a venue where drugs are consumed in a café-style setting.

The Police detailed that the closure order is effective for a duration of 85 days, commencing last Wednesday. This marks the first instance where the Fuvahmulah Magistrate Court has exercised its authority under the Drug Act to order the closure of a facility suspected of facilitating drug use.

During the period of the court order, unauthorized entry into the premises is considered a criminal offense. The Police emphasized that stringent legal action will be taken against individuals who trespass or cause any damage to the property.

The Police reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its efforts under the powers granted by the Drug Act. The institution stated that ongoing operations are focused on identifying and legally closing other establishments involved in the illicit drug trade and consumption.

As narcotics remain one of the most significant social challenges facing the Maldives, legislative reforms have been implemented to address the issue. This includes amendments to the Drug Act, which consists of the provision of the death penalty for those convicted of importing certain quantities of specified narcotics, came into effect earlier this year.

Statistics released by the Police indicate that 821 drug-related cases have been reported so far this year.

Notably, the Police have previously identified and conducted raids on similar "drug cafés" in the capital city, Malé, resulting in several arrests.
