STELCO's MD Dr. Ali Azwar.
State Electric Company (STELCO)’s Managing Director Ali Azwar has announced that preparations are underway to launch a major project aimed at ensuring a sustainable electricity supply for the population in the Greater Malé region.
In an interview with state media outlet PSM, Azwar underscored that electricity demand in the Malé area is climbing at an unprecedented pace, adding that the increase in high-rise developments and growing population density have contributed to a significant annual increase in power consumption.
Azwar emphasized the importance of implementing a large-scale project to meet the rapidly growing demand and confirmed that the necessary work in this trajectory is currently in progress.
Malé and Hulhumalé have recently experienced repeated power disruptions, including complete system failures that resulted in widespread blackouts, as well as extended outages affecting the densely populated residential towers in Hulhumalé Phase II.
Most recently, a major power outage affected Malé and Hulhumalé last Saturday, with electricity fully restored only after three hours and thirty minutes. The incident sparked public criticism of STELCO, particularly as it occurred less than a day after scheduled upgrading works at the Hulhumalé powerhouse had been completed.
