An inmate at the Hulhumale’ Prison went on the run on Thursday, after he was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
According to Maldives Correctional Service, Hussain Shahban, 29, Shabnam House, L. Maabaidhoo, went on the run after he was taken to the Hulhumale’ Hospital for emergency treatment.
The Correctional Service did not provide any details regarding the medical emergency that led to him being taken to the hospital.
The police have launched a manhunt in response to the incident.
Shahban is also the suspect in an arson case in March. The fire in question broke out at Hiyaaroadhi, a house located in the Galolhu district of Male’ City, on March 18. He was arrested on suspicion of arson and destruction of property in the case and ordered to jail pending the outcome of trial.
He also has an extensive record for prior convictions in similar cases.
The Correctional Service urged anyone with information regarding Shahban’s whereabouts or any information that could aid in his capture to immediately contact the police at 3322111.
The latest incident follows a similar one two weeks back, when a suspect held at Male’ Custodial fled on May 13 after he was taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). He was found days later, on May 18.
